Grad Dress: Thea

Sheer and Opaque Experiment

A little bit of backstory because it’s just soo sweet, this dress was a birthday gift from Thea’s boyfriend, Jay way back in November.

Thea opted to avail of her gift for her graduation. For the dress, Thea wanted something lacey but most importantly something that exemplifies what the Mara Chua brand is all about. The only limitation was the color which had to be on the darker shades- which is a good thing, since I love my dark shades.

Love doing projects where I’m given near 100% creative freedom.

For this one, I played with proportions, sheer, exploring the space between the body and the fabric. I just wanted something unconventional… not quite what you would expect with sheer/ opaque blocking. Edgy, yes, but still wearable and oddly delicate almost soft.

Dress: Cotton wool blend cap sleeved dress with tulle.

Simple in structure, complex in embellishment.

What caught my eye at the 2011 Bangkok International Fashion Fair was this “simple but complex” design by Thai designer Chalermkiat Khatikasemlert. The grey dress is simple in structure but embellished with many intricate pieces. Intrigued, I asked the designer about his inspiration.

It took Mr Chalermkiat two days to make this orange top.

Spring 02. Grad Dress: Chase

“ANTI- EMASCULATION OF SOFT AND ROUND THEMES”

For spring, it was all about rebellion. An attempt at invading themes most soft and feminine- they are almost considered exclusive- by claiming them as hard and masculine. In a way, I wanted people to view things like flowers and ‘dainty’ objects differently. That nothing can be truly feminine or masculine. They’re all constructs waiting to be reconstructed. This to me is what rebellion is all about.

Luckily, I have a sister who’s not a fashion conservative and is willing to inject a bit of edge into her clothing. Just a bit. Her grad dress is a prototype of the Spring collection.

Duchess halter full skirt dress with cut out back and pleated duchess drapes; raw silk panels; electric blue silk chiffon inserts. PHP7,500

traditional glam, femme… pretty

Pretty is easy. My aesthetic integrity can bring out the masochist in me. Obviously, I didn’t want something that’s just pretty. I wanted it to be pretty and interesting. To make interesting and unique happen, I focused my attention on color and texture.

Originally the agreed upon color was red with jets of silver. I had to change it after seeing this ombre chiffon in peach pink which I knew would just compliment her skin tone best.

As for texture, I didn’t want your typical clean hand draping. With such a pretty potentially multi- dimensional fabric to work with, I thought it was such a waste to do clean uniform type of hand pleating. Plus, the whole organic almost root growth pleating gives the dress character- something not just off the rack; an indelible Mara Chua stamp.

All in all, I’m quite pleased with the outcome. Happy even. Thank you to my client, Jesiree for making me a part of her grad ball experience. :)

Dress: Nude base body con dress with ombre peach pink chiffon ruching and velvet satin bands. Detachable double layer tulle skirt.

Pseudo nostalgic tendencies

I’ve always considered most of my life a non-event. Save for the past 7 years when I decided to wander off the smooth pavement. Most of the memories I hold dearest were from those 7 years. This song gives those etches of my past a much needed rub. It’s a very interesting but generally warm feeling to be reminded the good and the bad and how much has changed.

“To see that we don’t care
To shake these zipper blues
And we don’t know
Just where our bones will rest to dust
I guess forgotten and absorbed
Into the earth below”

hmmm…..

I’m rather reluctant to admit that I actually quite like Flo Rida’s mixes. Because I’m a pretentious hipster like that! Mwahaahahaha

but this is very good alternative to morning coffee. and Sia is loooove.

“I am a wild one, break me in

Saddle me up and let’s begin

I am a wild one, tame me now

Running with wolves

I’m on the prowl…”

Prom theme: VINTAGE

(fucking vintage. hehehe)

She originally had the Reese Witherspoon film, “Water For Elephants” as her peg.

For people who know me, they know how much I frown upon certain themes. Especially the overused vintage and hollywood. hehe. The wonderful thing was Gia and her mom were very open to ideas. All I really had to bear in mind were her school’s dressing guidelines (conservative), a few details Gia wanted (not floor length, really big skirt, lace back and mesh detailing), the two most important words during our consultation:”best dressed”; and the rest was up to me. :)

So, 30 yards of cream and mocha tulle; a few bags of feathers individually hand sewn and re-sewn; some really exquisite pearl embroidered lace later…

One of my fave dresses that I made to date.

INTENSE!!!!!

It was my ex that got me hooked to sci-fi Ridley. Especially Blade Runner! One of my favouritest films ever.

So it’s quite exciting to see Ridley Scott doing another sci-fi film after such a long time. Crossing my fingers this one will be just as great. :)

Basing from this intensetastic trailer… we’re seeing something very very promising.

EXCITEDDDDD
